Solid Waste Collection Day in La Piedad Lagoon

On February 28, 2024, students from the Metropolitan Autonomous University-Azcapotzalco participated in the 3rd National Solid Waste Collection Day of Water Bodies in La Piedad Lagoon, Cuautitlan Izcalli, State of Mexico. In alliance with other environmental and community organizations such as ECOPIL, the communities of San Jose Huilango and San Francisco Tepojaco, and local authorities who provided logistical support and waste disposal facilities, the students participated in the removal of solid waste that contaminates La Piedad Lagoon, in addition to documenting audio-visually the activities carried out to restore this ecosystem and increase public awareness of the actions that could be taken to improve solid waste management to prevent them from ending up contaminating water bodies.

During this event, 2 tons of solid residues and 136 tires were collected, a significant step towards a cleaner environment. The volunteers, including students from UAM, were equipped with gloves, shovels, and the necessary materials, showing their dedication to the cause. In addition to collecting solid residues, students interviewed other volunteers to document their perception of the pollution that affects La Piedad Lagoon and its impact on the community. This activity strengthened the community's governance and fostered stronger social cohesion and commitment to rescuing La Piedad Lagoon.
