3RD UAM-EPIC FIELD WORK OUTING (March 14, 2024)

On March 14, 2024, another field trip was carried out with 75 people, including students and professors from three Academic Divisions of the Metropolitan Autonomous University-Azcapotzalco, to continue generating knowledge to rescue La Piedad Lagoon. The students played a crucial role in this endeavor. Students from the Division of Social Sciences and Humanities (DCSH) conducted interviews with the inhabitants who live around the Lagoon to identify the economic activities they carried out before the Lagoon was polluted, the impacts caused by the contamination of this water body in their lives and health, and the activities they consider to carry out once the Lagoon is decontaminated. Students from the Division of Basic Sciences and Engineering (DCBI) collected water samples in the Lagoon for their analysis in the Laboratory. Students assessed variations in water pollution in the Lagoon at different times during the year. Students from the Division of Sciences and Arts for Design (DCyAD) were in charge of documenting the activities carried out through photographs and videos, which sought to capture key moments from the fieldwork to raise community awareness about the environmental problems facing La Piedad Lagoon.

During the fieldwork, the local community's response was not just positive, but heartening. They expressed their concerns about the Lagoon's pollution and showed a strong willingness to collaborate in future actions to rescue it. This positive interaction and the valuable information collected provide a hopeful and promising outlook for the project's future. The data gathered during this visit will be instrumental in developing new recovery strategies and communicating the importance of conserving this ecosystem.
